NIGERIAN GOVERNORS WHO DIED IN OFFICE AND THE CAUSES OF DEATH

Ondo State, Akure - Late Ondo state governor Rotimi Akeredolu has joined the list of Nigerian governors who have died in office since the country's independence in 1960.


Arakunrin Akeredolu became Nigeria's fourth governor to die in office.

YAKOWA, PATRICK IBRAHIM


Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, the then-governor of Kaduna state, was murdered along with five others in a helicopter crash in Ogbia Creek, Bayelsa state, in 2012, according to Aljazeera.



Yakowa, Kaduna's first Christian governor, took over for Namadi Sambo after the latter was appointed vice president under Goodluck Jonathan.



ALI, MAMMAN


Mamman Ali, the then-governor of Yobe state, died in a Florida hospital in 2019 just two weeks after visiting the country for medical treatment.


Alli was elected in May 2007 on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), according to AllAfrica.


SHEHU KANGIWA


Shehu Kangiwa died in office in a polo accident in January 1982, according to Premarv Media.


Kangiwa was the governor of Sokoto state when he died.



Garba Nadama, Kamgiwa's deputy, was sworn in as Sokoto governor until November 1983, when Muhammadu Buhari assumed power in a military coup.
