BREAKING: ONDO GOVERNOR  AKEREDOLU IS DEAD.

According to reports, Akeredolu died on Wednesday in Lagos.

The governor of Ondo died at the age of 67.

BACKGROUND: Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), was re-elected state governor in October 2020 and inaugurated in for a second term in February 2021.

However, Akeredolu developed health problems after getting medical treatment in another country in June. 

He returned to Nigeria in September, but stayed in Ibadan, Oyo State's capital.

On Wednesday, December 13, he took another sick absence and formally transferred power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who thereafter accepted the governor's responsibilities in full acting capacity.

Following his return to Nigeria in September, Akeredolu remained in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, and attempted to run his state from there, sparking popular uproar.

On July 9, Akeredolu's wife, Betty, announced the cancellation of festivities planned to commemorate her husband's 70th birthday.

The Ondo first lady announced the halt of festivities on Twitter after doubts were raised about her husband's bad health and plans for a fanfare.

"Hello Family and Friends," Betty stated in a statement via her X handle. 

This is to advise you that owing to unanticipated events beyond my control, all festivities planned to commemorate my 70th birthday have been canceled until further notice.

We apologize for any inconvenience this development has caused.

"However, rest assured that I will be welcomed back in style." Thank you for your patience.

"I will always be Arabinrin a.k.a Ada Owere I," she added.
