D'Tigress, Nigeria's female basketball team, defeated Senegal to win the 2023 FIBA Women's Afrobasket Championship for the fourth time in a row.


The Lionesses have now lost four Afrosbasket finals to the D'Tigress.


The ladies headed by Rena Wakama overcame the 11-time African champions 84-74 on Saturday at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda, to win their sixth championship.


D'Tigress will now compete for a place in the women's basketball event at the 2024 Olympics.With a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter, D'Tigress immediately established their control.

The final quarter


The Senegalese kept it tight in the second quarter, with D'Tigress expanding their lead to 12 at the halftime break with a 24-21 score.
Rena Wakama is the first female Afrobasket coach to win the championship.


Senegal came out stronger in the second half, winning the third quarter 26-19 and cutting the margin to five points.
 D'Tigress defeat Rwanda 79-48 to get to the AfroBasket final.


The fourth quarter was back and forth between the two strongest teams in the competition, with Senegal closing the lead but D'Tigress winning by ten points.


The Lionesses have now lost four Afrosbasket finals to the D'Tigress (in 2005, 2017, 2019, and 2023).
