The federal government, according to Betta Edu, minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation, is determined to raising 133 million Nigerians out of poverty.

Speaking at a meeting with heads of ministry agencies in Abuja on Monday, Edu stated that this will be accomplished through various interventions and efforts aimed at decreasing poverty.

The newly appointed minister told Nigerians that she would work hard to promote openness and accountability during her tenure.

"What is most important is that we will keep our focus on lifting 133 million Nigerians out of poverty," she stated.

"We can do it in stages, one step at a time, because nothing is impossible with determination and strong will."

Edu also stated that all hands must be on deck to combat the country's poverty rate.

"Different data sources suggest that we have a population of 200 million Nigerians, which I believe we are more than," the minister explained.

"Sources indicate that 136 million of this population are extremely poor, which is unacceptable."We need to put smiles back on Nigerians' faces. We must reach out to the underserved and restore their faith.

"At the same time, we must ensure that we increase our efforts, are sincere, transparent, and accountable."

Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, the ministry's permanent secretary, told Edu that they will work together to fulfill the mandate of the administration.
